February 14, 208 (IANS)- State-owned Power Finance Corp Ltd (PFC) Thursday inked a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with West Bengal Green Energy Development Corp Ltd (WBGEDCL) to set up India’s first grid-connected solar power plant. The 2-MW photovoltaic plant would come up at Dishergarh Power Station Complex near Asansol in Burdwan district of southern West Bengal.
“The unit will come up over 8.3 acres of land with an investment of more than Rs.410 million. The state government will take about Rs.400 million from the PFC to execute the project,” West Bengal Power Minister Mrinal Banerjee told reporters here.
He said this solar power plant would be the first of its kind in South Asia.
“We are expecting to complete the first module of the project by July this year and the second module will also be finished by the end of 2008,” he said.
WBGEDCL is promoted by the state government for promotion and development of grid-connected renewable sources of energy. It is implementing renewable energy programmes of the central Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and West Bengal.
MNRE has set for itself a goal to add an additional 14,000-MW of grid-quality power through renewable resources by the end of 11th five-year plan (2007-12).
According to estimates, West Bengal has a potential to add 10,000-MW through renewable energy, including solar sources.
At present, the installed capacity of electric power from non-conventional renewable energy sources in West Bengal is 76 MW.
In addition to this, WBGEDCL has drawn up an action plan to add 400 MW of power through renewable energy sources by 2012.
Banerjee said there were some projects in the pipeline for a solar energy park in Purulia district.
“The solar energy park will have separate power projects by private investors and the total capacity would be around 30 MW. About 100 acres would be required for that,” he said.
Good to see leadership from states like West Bengal to encourage Solar Energy adoption.

It gives us a great pleasure to offer this proposal for establishing wind/solar/biomass/natural gas-based power supply joint-venture project for your kind review. Through this exciting facility you can avail a great opportunity to invest at a very reasonable environment. The private sector power generation policy announced in 1996 under which private power companies are exempt from income tax for 15 years. Several barge-mounted power plants are in operation. But an extensive demand gap for power is crucial. Opportunities exist in developing new plants and a variety of support services.
Now in Bangladesh the shortage of power supply causes a great harm in national life. It is going to be beyond the limit. At present our country needs 5200mw.power per annum and the Government and private sector provide only 2700-3100mw. power in a body. For this shortage of power supply we are in great loss. All of the developmental activities are in menace. Our supply of export and import is going to be declined day by day. But the extensive demand of power is increasing categorically.
The Government of Bangladesh can not be able to supply power at potential level. So Investment interests in power sector are highly encouraged by the Government of Bangladesh. It’s an excellent profitable business to establish power plant and it has much more demand in such a developing country like Bangladesh. We are very much interested to establish wind/solar/biomass/natural gas based power plant here in Bangladesh to minimize the existing crisis of power and are looking for investors to implement the fabulous project. We have a lot of experiences in project implementing; financial survey; portfolio analysis; placement; reporting and we have a good link with Bangladesh Government to develop such a sophisticated project like this.
Interested Joint-venture investors are requested to work with some links and we would like to be local joint-venture partner and guide. As we say we need the details of investing company, Business policy with other countries, Business structure and experience and most of all the whole investment process of the business.
We sincerely believe that we will be able to provide a highly reliable and satisfactory level of service.
We are very much eager to hear from interested investors soon.
Thanking you.

Excellent business.
I think its a wonderful idea, But I was just curious, as of in INDIA why only govt. is more into this type of business. Can Individual’s build such solar power plant ?? And is enough financing available from the government???
I had another curiosity, during my research in the solar power plants, I have came across more information on solar thermal powerplants rather than the regular PV solar power plants. Is there anything like more efficiency in the solar thermal powerplant or is it more cost effective???
